Just a few words about me – and my qualifications

My name is Maria Oates. I am a qualified secondary maths teacher with a strong mathematical background.

I live in Hazel Grove, Stockport , round the corner from Hazel Grove High School (South Manchester –  near Poynton, Bramhall, Cheadle Hulme, Woodford, Offerton), with my husband and 11-year-old son. I grew up in Manchester, and was educated at Manchester High School for Girls, an independent school in Rusholme/Fallowfield.

I always enjoyed learning maths.

During my years at MHSG I quickly developed my love for maths. I gained 9 GCSEs, but my favourite by far was Mathematics (I achieved an A). I passed the extra Extension Paper, and was awarded the school maths prize.

My A-Levels, all grade A, included Maths and Further Maths. I also received a gold certificate in the UKMT Senior Challenge.

After high school, I went on to the University of Manchester. I completed my BSc in Pure Maths with Computation (2.i) in 1995, then immediately afterwards started working in the Tax Technology department of PricewaterhouseCoopers, a “Big Four” accountancy firm, and I stayed there for 14 years, until 2009.

In 2000 – 2003, as well as working at PwC part-time, I completed a ‘flexible’ PGCE (Post Graduate Certificate in Education) in Secondary Mathematics at the University of Manchester, and though I didn’t make the jump into a teaching job, I have tutored on and off since then.

I teach maths to children of all ability levels.

Over the years, I have successfully taught pupils from both comprehensive and private schools, and helped my students to improve their performance. In particular, I have helped many young students to improve their enjoyment of, and confidence in, the subject.

I believe strongly that students should enjoy learning maths. I adopt a friendly but focused approach to my lessons, and my personal goal is to make every student see the personal value in working towards their maths qualifications.

    Hi Maria,
I would be interested in finding out if I could book an hours session with you?
I’m 29years but looking for some help with long Division.
I work for British Airways and have a technical test this Wednesday for a job in another department. I’ve cracked long multiplication but having great difficulty with long division which I hear is part of the test.
Sorry it’s such short notice, I did not think I would struggle like I am.

    Thanks, Michelle

    Hi Maria,

I am enquiring as to whether you have any availability for helping my daughter, Olivia. She is currently in year 4 (10) at SGS and while she is fairing ok at maths, I feel she may benefit from help in the run up to her GCSE next year.

I look forward to hearing from you.

    Regards
