I am not entirely convinced by the numbers in this article, but I do know that the best maths and science graduates must struggle to fight against the accepted idea that they would be better off in lower stress, higher paid jobs with more prestige associated with them.
In the UK we have a cultural perception that “those who can, do and those who can’t, teach.” We don’t respect teaching as a vocation or a profession, so we will struggle to encourage our brightest, most ambitious and talented people to take on this cultural prejudice personally.
